Oil consumption as a % of fuel burn

Oil consumption as a % of fuel burn

MTU often calculates oil consumption as a % of fuel burn. For example all the series 4000 engines generally are between 0.3% of fuel burn after 100hrs of operation to 1.0% of fuel burn. To calculate this you will need to start an oil consumption trial say over 24 hrs and understand the top up oil quantity for the test period and also the accumulative fuel usage total at the start of the trial and at the end of the trial. Fuel usage quantities can be obtained in DDEC under accumulative totals and in Diasys in trip data found in the extras tab. once you know the quantity of oil used Vs fuel quantity over the test period you can work out the oil consumption as a % of fuel burn.

Example:

Oil usage = 20 litres divided by fuel used = 8950 litres then hit  %

20 / 8950 % =  0.22% of fuel burn.
