OM Legacy Engine Used Oil limits and Fuel Dilution

OM Legacy Engine Used Oil limits and Fuel Dilution

Attached is a basic guide for OM Legacy engine used oil recommended limits for reference. With specific regard to fuel dilution reports of the oil, an OM engines can have fuel in oil reasonably regularly and to reasonable amount dependent on duty cycle / operations and can be quite common for this report from certain customers if they aren’t used to it or already monitoring trends ( typically cranes / light load idling etc) There are a lot of customers that don’t even do oil analysis on these smaller engines so scares an organisation who is used to other engines etc.                Note the attached MB guide suggest >7% fuel and more important gives a % of viscosity change from new oil as indicator of concern. It basically has to be a clear cut mechanical fault ie. fuel coming out the dipstick and low oil pressure alarms or you may keep chasing your tail and won’t be able to fix or improve anything mechanically if it is due to operation / duty cycle / maintenance schedules etc.…Note it is very rare for an OM engine mechanical fault causing fuel dilution and typically only reported after something been done ie. from new or following major repair service and o’ring or something pinched.      If customer is reporting this concern recommend following be also well reviewed and considered before spending any time reviewing for mechanical faults that may not be present and unnecessarily upsetting customers and operation:- -          Compare oil sample results against MB guidelines ie.  -25% of fresh oil viscosity either at 40 or 100..(Baseline of actual new oil sample should be used) -          Compare trends of customers other units and the unit in question. -          Look at wear metal trends as if not increasing or growing can show not causing engine wear etc.. -          Review maintenance schedules ie. hours between oil change etc. -          Monitor dipstick levels, any oil pressure low alarms etc.

    • Oil consumption as a % of fuel burn

MTU often calculates oil consumption as a % of fuel burn. For example all the series 4000 engines generally are between 0.3% of fuel burn after 100hrs of operation to 1.0% of fuel burn. To calculate this you will need to start an oil consumption ...
