MTU manufacture oversize / staged cylinder liners enabling worn crankcases to be machined to suit use of these liners. Within Australia our reman preference is to machine crankcases with use of inserts to maintain original configuration and use of standard (stage 0) liners only, however the practise of machining to staged liner sizing is common in other regions or specific repair requirements.
Care should be taken when performing any in field repairs to ensure appropriate measurements are reviewed to ensure re-installation of suitable liner, both the bore sizing and checking of installed liner height as flange thickness also varies with staged OD. All specifications are available within relative wear and tolerance or service manuals. Observing removed liners for stage identification is also recommended.
Note; part numbers for relative staged liners are different to standard liners and clearly marked on external of liner to allow visual comparison, in addition for simplicity MTU has incorporated a visible / felt identification groove as per attached TSD 23-01 details for ease of confirmation.
