Engine Valve Clearance Measurement recording recommendations

Engine Valve Clearance Measurement recording recommendations

With engine initial settling in, varying engine designs, materials, applications, duties, fluids used and maintenance practices wear rates of engine components can vary. The initial and regular ongoing recommended maintenance check and adjustment of valve clearances is critical to accommodate for this or to highlight any abnormalities occurring.   When performing this task it is good basic practise and recommended to obtain and record measurements of valve clearances as found prior to making adjustments. This will then be able to highlight :- No concerns with engineAbnormalities occurring that may require immediate or future actions, inspections.Trends of wear rates may provide a more suitable ongoing maintenance interval.   Attached is generic measurements worksheet which can be utilised for this task and record keeping with customer or job file.   Note some engine models and applications may provide additional measurement reference points to verify wear rates i.e. valve stem protrusion. Always reference relevant and current published service literature for applicable engine specifications, settings and maintenance task procedures.Reference material - TSD 18-01
